State Employee Charitable Campaign
The State Employee Charitable Campaign starts next week. At General Assembly, President Kinslow announced his personal contribution of $10,000 to the ACC Foundation - $7500 for the College Connection Scholarships and $2500 for the Presidential Scholarship. He challenged employees to match my $7,500 contribution through this year’s SECC campaign, which begins on Monday, October 1. If you give to the ACC Foundation (#228065), we have the potential of raising a total of $15,000. This will then be matched by the Foundation dollar for dollar for a total of $30,000! "I hope you will join me in supporting this year’s SECC," says Dr. Kinslow.

Summer Picnic Anyone?
The following question comes from Human Resources:An employee association also suggested that we host a summer picnic (sports) event for all employees. This may be possible if the associations are willing to coordinate the event. The college might underwrite some of the cost (but not all). The associations would be responsible for the coordination of food and events. Please let me know if your association would be interested in participating in this effort.
Leave a comment or send your suggestions to me.
Retirement Recognition Changes?
Human Resources would like our input on how retirement recognition should proceed. The following text is from HR:
One employee association is suggesting that we return to having an annual recognition for retirees. You will recall that we changed this process two years ago. We used to have a reception in the Boardroom co-sponsored by the Retiree Association. The employee associations wanted to have the recognition conducted in the departments. Currently, we send the gift to the department and they are responsible for the retiree reception. Lately we have had an increase in the number of full-time faculty retiring. I would like to know if you want to return to having an annual recognition.

Prof-Tech Profile
At our first APTE rep meeting of the year, several folks asked, "What exactly is a prof-tech?" Good question. They are many things from accountants to facilities managers to student support specialists to statisticians. We are a group of people who may share so-called "job families," but really carry out unique roles within the college. Thus, I shall endevor to answer the question in the coming year by periodicially profiling different prof-techs.Here we see a prof-tech in his natural habitat. This is Ben Mathey, Adult Education Recruiter / Student Advisor Specialist. As with many of us, his title does little to help you understand what he does on a daily basis. Ben works in the Department of Adult Education, as he puts it, "solving problems." He works with a team of other specialists and coordinators to recruit, advise, orient, register, and assess students in Adult Education programs (Adult Basic Education, GED, and ESL). As you can see here, he is completing state mandated paperwork for newly registered students at a partner agency (City of Austin Libraries.)
If you would like to be profiled, send me an email: dborden@austincc.edu
